Stella, an adult female, transferred in from Calgary Humane Society and has settled into foster home life beautifully.
Equal parts a lovely refined lady, and an utterly derpy goofball, Stelly-bean is the perfect mix of class and sass. Extremely polite & quiet in the home, she’s absolutely content to lounge by the fire, relax on the couch, or hang out and watch movies with her people on a rainy day. Impeccable house manners means she waits patiently for feeding time, respects kitchen space, is fully house trained, quiet and settled in her crate, knows many basic verbal commands and is very easy to have in the home.
Her chill demeanour can be deceiving though! This girl LOVES her outings and can be hilariously animated when it’s time to go for walks. Not the most physically graceful, she can be a bit rammy when she gets excited and tends to run into things and knock stuff over with her wildly wagging tail. She’s earned the nickname Stellaphant as she thunders around the house. Outside, she is still working on her leash walk and learning not to pull. Once she settles a little bit and gets moving she walks fairly well with minimal pulling. She’s been good and non-reactive passing other dogs on leash, people of all shapes and sizes, and wheeled mobiles like bikes and scooters. Some loud noises will spook her, and other leash reactive dogs coming towards her can get her attention, but she’s easily redirected with a touch to her back or a focus command and reward. She does show a little more interest in smaller dogs as they approach her from a distance but she can easily be redirected. She has shown a small amount of prey drive towards small darting movements in both dogs and wild critters while on walks but redirects with a leave it command and hasn’t shown any over the top fixation while on leashes walks.
Stella loves toys, and playing with humans. She has a very good “out” command and is good about releasing her toys to the humans, and ending play when overstimulated. She does NOT enjoy sharing toys with her foster brother though so toys could be a trigger in the home if not monitored carefully during playtime.
She has integrated into her doggy partnership pretty well, though she knows she’s a big girl and uses her size and weight to her advantage during play to intimidate her foster brother a little bit. She likes to be the centre of attention when affection is being handed out, but she’s getting better at sharing time with her foster bro. While she’d likely be happiest as an only dog, she’s proven she can integrate with a stable energy male with proper introduction and management so she understands the house rules.
Stella has not met many people outside her foster family since coming into foster, but her confidence is increasing and she’s getting more and more comfortable in new places. She will continue her education and exposure to new places and new people during her time in foster, but she will likely be just fine with newcomers & strangers in her house provided her humans allow her space and time to meet and greet guests in her own time. When forced into uncomfortable situations she has a tendency to shut down a little bit and show some fearful body language. She is coming out of these behaviours much faster than when she arrived and is showing curiosity and interest in new people especially when treats are involved!
Stella is around 4-6 years old and although loves her walks does require some medication for her arthritic knees (most likely from a previous unknown injury). She sometimes has trouble using her back legs after a walk or playtime but with medication and some doggy physical therapy Stella would only benefit. Stella would likely do best in a home that isn’t overly hectic and will respect her boundaries and allow her time to build trust.
